How to cable knit a hat, a cozy and stylish pattern. Cable knitting looks complicated, however it’s really just a matter of creating the twist by knitting a single round in which stitches are worked out of order. The rest is all basic knit and purl stitches!

Knitting Abbreviations

  • K = Knit
  • K1F&B = Knit a stitch in the front and in the back (increase a stitch)
  • K2TOG = Knit 2 together
  • P = Purl
  • ST = Stitch
  • STS = Stitches

Materials & Tools

Size

Adult 16″ circumference

Gauge: 4″ / 14 STS + 15 rows in cable pattern

Pattern

Cast On

  1. Cast on 50 STS
  2. Join in the round, making sure not to twist the stitches, and place your marker

Brim Rounds + Increase

Round 1: [ k1, p1 ] – repeat until the end of the round

Round 2: repeat Round 1

Round 3: repeat Round 1

Round 4: repeat Round 1

Round 5: repeat Round 1

Round 6: [ k1, p1, k1, p1, k1, p1, k1, p1, k1, k1f&b ] – repeat until the end of the round, 5 STS increased to 55 total STS

Pattern Rounds

Round 7: [ k9, p2 ] – repeat until the end of the round

Round 8: [ k9, p2 ] – repeat until the end of the round

Round 9: [ place 3 STS on cable needle in back, k3, k3 from cable needle, k3, p2 ] – repeat until the end of the round

Round 10: [ k9, p2 ] – repeat until the end of the round

Round 11: [ k9, p2 ] – repeat until the end of the round

Round 12: [ k3, place 3 STS on cable needle in front, k3, k3 from cable needle, p2 ] – repeat until the end of the round

Repeat rounds 7-12 until your hat reaches ~8-8.5″, ending with Round 9 or Round 12

Shaping the Crown

Round 1: [ k2tog ] to 1 ST before the end, k1

Cut the yarn, leaving about a 10″ tail, threat the tail onto a tapestry needle, pull taught to close the top of the hat and on the wrong side you want to weave in the ends
