How to knit a broadway stitch hat, a contrasting texture perfect for men. It may look complicated but it’s made using just knit and purl stitches along with basic shaping techniques.

Knitting Abbreviations

  • K = Knit
  • K2TOG = Knit 2 together
  • P = Purl
  • P2TOG = Purl 2 together
  • SKPO = Slip, knit, pass over
  • ST = Stitch
  • STS = Stitches

Materials & Tools

  • Tapestry needle
  • 1 stitch marker
  • Knitting Needles: 4mm (US 6 / UK 8) circular knitting needles, 4.5mm (UK 7 / UK 7) if you are a tight knitter
  • Yarn: Medium weight #4 – Lion Brand Heartland Yarn, Canyonlands gold/yellow, 251yds per skien (less than 1 skien used)

Size

Adult 21-23″ circumference

Gauge: 4″ / 15-16 STS

Pattern

Cast On & Brim

  1. Using smaller sized needles, cast on 80 stitches (or any other number that is divisible by 16)
  2. Join in the round, making sure not to twist the stitches, and place your marker
  3. For a hat without a folded brim: k2, p2 until the hat reaches ~2″
  4. For a hat with a folded brim: k2, p2 until the hat reaches ~6″
  5. Change needles to 4.5mm (if needed)

Pattern Rounds

Round 1: [ k10, p2, k2, p2 ] – repeat until the end of the round

Round 2: [ k2, p6, k2, p2, k2, p2 ] – repeat until the end of the round

Round 3: repeat Round 1

Round 4: repeat Round 2

Round 5: repeat Round 1

Round 6: repeat Round 2

Round 7: repeat Round 1

Round 8: repeat Round 2

Round 9: [ k2, p2, k2, p2, k8 ] – repeat until the end of the round

Round 10: [ k2, p2, k2, p2, k2, p6 ] – repeat until the end of the round

Round 11: repeat Round 9

Round 12 repeat Round 10

Round 13: repeat Round 9

Round 14 repeat Round 10

Round 15: repeat Round 9

Round 16: repeat Round 10

Repeat rounds 1-16 until the hat reaches ~6-8″

After the first 16 rounds, repeat the pattern only from 1st to 12th round

Shaping the Crown

Round 1: [ k2, p2, k2, p2, k2, k2tog, k2, k2tog ] – repeat until the end of the round

Round 2: [ k2, p2, k2, p2, k2, p4 ] – repeat until the end of the round

Round 3: [ k2, p2tog, k2, p2tog, k6 ] – repeat until the end of the round

Round 4: [ k2, p1, k2, p1, k2, p4 ] – repeat until the end of the round

Round 5: [ k2, p1, k2, p1, k2, k2tog, k2 ] – repeat until the end of the round

Round 6: [ k2, p1, k2, p1, k2, p2tog, p1 ] – repeat until the end of the round

Round 7: [ k1, skpo, k2, k2tog, skpo, k2tog ] – repeat until the end of the round. At the end, when you left 1 STS, remove the stitch marker and make k2tog using 1 stitch from the next round. Place marker back

Round 8: [ k2tog ] – repeat until the end of the round

Cut the yarn, thread the tail onto a tapestry needle, pull taught to close the top of the hat and on the wrong side you want to weave in the ends.
